लूसियानो पावरोती कौन थे ?

इतालवी ओपेरा के मशहूर सितारे लूसियानो पावरोती का, जो ओपेरा को 20वीं सदी के महानतम गायकों में से एक के तौर पर आम जनता तक लाए थे, उत्तरी इटली में उनके घर में निधन हो गया, वह 71 वर्ष के थे ।
14 महीने पहले उनके पैनक्रियाज में कैंसर हो गया था । ओपेरा की दुनिया में प्रसिद्ध होने के बाद पावरोती को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय ख्याति तब मिली, जब उन्होंने और डोमिंगो ने जोस कारीरास के साथ मिलकर 1990 में इटली में फुटबॉल वर्ल्ड कप के दौरान "द थ्री टैनर्स" का प्रदर्शन किया ।
पावरोती का जन्म 1935 में मोडेना में हुआ था । वर्षों के रियाज और प्रशिक्षण के बाद उन्होंने 1961 में एक गायन प्रतियोगिता में सफलता प्राप्त की और उन्हें प्यूसिनी के ओपेरा "ला बोहीम" में एक भूमिका दी गई । ओपेरा में उनका पहला बड़ा प्रदर्शन 1963 में लंदन में हुआ और 5 साल बाद उन्होंने न्यूयॉर्क के मेट्रोपोलिटन ओपेरा में भाग लिया ।

पावरोती ने एक बार खुद को अपनी शानदार आवाज का गुलाम बताया था । उन्होंने कहा था कि गायक होना एक एथलीट होने की तरह है, जिसे लगातार प्रशिक्षण की जरूरत पड़ती है ।

* "Dire sulla bocca", literally "to say on the mouth", is a poetic Italian way of saying "to kiss." (Or so I've been told, but perhaps a native speaker can confirm or deny this.) I've also been told that a line from a Marx Brothers movie -- "I wasn't kissing her, I was whispering in her mouth" -- is a conscious imitation of the Italian phrase.

** "Tramontate" literally means "go behind the mountains", but it's the word Italians use for sunset and the like. It's also a word Turandot uses after Calaf kisses her: "E l'alba! Turandot tramonta!" ("It's dawn, Turandot descends!") This suggests yet another mythopoetic theme which pervades the Turandot libretto -- the sun god's defeat of the moon goddess -- but I won't get into that....
